Royal York Hotel Toronto

Royal York Hotel Toronto retains history dating back to the mid-1840s when a lake boat captain named Thomas Dick first erected Ontario Terrace, a composite of four red-brick row houses. Knox Theological College took the property on soon after, running the school for nearly a decade. In 1853, another of the early Toronto hotels took the place of the college after a massive refurbishment. Keeping in step with early Fairmont Royal York Toronto history, the hotel was yet again taken over by new owners and renamed, yet again, the Revere Hotel.

Experiencing more prosperous times, Thomas Dick was able to re-purchase the now-revamped building in 1862, which had taken on the name of the Queen’s Hotel and was seemingly destined to change hands ad nauseam. Several years after, the CPR (Canadian Pacific Railway) announced plans to construct the biggest hotel ever in the British Commonwealth, and so the Queen’s Hotel was subsequently demolished. The Royal York Hotel Toronto officially opened on June 11 of 1929 as the tallest of all buildings in the British Commonwealth. It set the standard for hospitality then, and it still sets the standard today.

If first impressions mean anything, the Royal York offers a lasting one throughout the entire hotel experience. Even from afar, the neon hotel lights sit discernibly perched high atop the building’s peak, casting a luminescent glow over nearby buildings. Plush furniture, magnificent bouquets, antiques, gold accents, and marble floors define the lobby of the Fairmont Royal York Toronto. The name lends images of royalty while the experience is truly fit for the distinction. Considered one of the more welcoming luxury hotels in the city, the Royal York has a reputation known country-wide. Friendly staff offer abounding services and a smile to boot.

The Royal York Hotel Toronto is a legendary establishment the city has literally grown up around. It is surrounded by a combination of attractions and things to do, but perhaps the most appealing of all are the offerings inside. Guest rooms, suites, and specialty suites are all available, offering a tier of luxurious amenities. There are almost 1,400 rooms in total at the Fairmont Royal York Toronto, each with endowed with lavish decor and elegant appointments. In-suite films, high-speed Internet, and plenty of services for business travelers illustrates this historic hotel is laced with modern amenities.

The Fairmont Gold Floor completely bypasses the standard of all luxury hotels like the King Edward, Four Seasons, and even The Ritz. The Gold Floor is for gold-star service, amenities, and a superior atmosphere. Forget hotel rooms. Gold Floor status offers large suites with separate sleeping, living, and eating quarters, access to private board rooms, city and area tours, and premium tickets to sporting events and sold out events throughout the city.

Dining is nothing less than first-class at the Royal York Hotel Toronto, from simple and quick bites to world-class epicurean delights. Five outstanding restaurants and four sleek lounges touch on all dining and entertaining needs. The spa and health club takes it to the next level, with marble floors, an indoor lap pool, change rooms, saunas, steam rooms, a fitness center, and complimentary towels and robes. Massage therapy is offered through Swedish and aromatherapy approaches in private spa quarters.

Guests that manage to tear themselves away from the royal treatment at the Fairmont Royal York Toronto will be pleased with the many entertaining options surrounding it. Casa Loma, the CN Tower, and the Air Canada Centre are just the beginning. Cruises and ferries at the Harbourfront, excellent museums, great shopping and amusement parks like Ontario Place are all around. Due west is Toronto’s Entertainment District and within easy reach is Old Town Toronto, a hub of markets, great shopping, and countless other attractions that leave visitors feeling as captivated as after a night at the Royal York Hotel.

Hotels in Toronto, Canada

Finding hotel deals in Toronto can be quite a challenge, especially for those arriving during the high season or during major festivals. The good news is that you can always do a bit of bargaining to get a better price on your Toronto Canada hotel. Most prices listed are just rack rates, so you’ll be pleasantly surprised to find that it is possible to get a 5-50% discount on your room, just by asking. Hotels prefer to have guests pay a reduced rate, than have an empty room. That is, of course, assuming that there would be an empty room, should you decide not to take it. When the city is packed out to the max, try to do some bargaining, but remember that there might not be many other options available. Some hotel deals in Toronto may include museum passes or meals, and many provide discounts for students, seniors, clubs, etc. Always ask.

It makes sense to decide on the attractions that you most want to be near when looking into hotel deals in Toronto. You may find a cheap hotel in Toronto, but it could be clear across town, and not worth the distance it takes to get to your desired destinations. Most hotels can be found in the following neighborhoods: Downtown West, Downtown East, Midtown West, Midtown East/ The East End and Uptown. There are also some hotels further east and close to the airport. Once you decide what area of town you most want to be in, a discount Toronto hotel should be within close proximity.

If you’re looking for more ambiance than just a cheap hotel in Toronto, you may want to look into a Bed and Breakfast. There are quite a few to chose from, both in the downtown area and across the city. Prices are very reasonable, similar to what a discount Toronto hotel might cost. The advantage of a B&B is getting to know some local knowledge of the city and the friendly feeling of staying in a home.

Probably the most historically significant Toronto Canada hotel is Le Royal Meridien King Edward, opened in 1903. This luxurious hotel is located in the heart of the city, close to most of Toronto’s biggest attractions. Le Royal Meridien King Edward has catered to celebrities throughout the century, including the Beatles in the 1960’s. If you can’t afford to stay here, it’s worth it to take a peak inside at the gorgeous lobby.

It is worth noting that many hotels in Toronto allow smoking, and though there are areas of the hotel designated to smokers, the smell often wafts through the whole building. This is generally more of a problem in a discount Toronto hotel, rather than a more expensive one. At any rate, if you are a non-smoker, make sure you ask your Toronto Canada hotel about its smoking policy.

Skyline in Toronto, Canada

The Toronto skyline is a stunning sight to behold, both to those who see it every day and anyone visiting the city for the first time. As the largest city in Canada, Toronto has an expansive skyline; it borders the waterfront and is a blend of commercial and residential freestanding high-rise buildings that dominate the horizon.

The tallest of the Toronto skyscrapers is the CN Tower, which rises 1,815 feet and is the second-tallest freestanding structure in the world. It is a communications and observation tower, meaning that while it has great height, it doesn’t have back-to-back floors available for habitation. It does offer beautiful views of the city from the observation decks, which are located at 1,135 feet and 1,465 feet.

The First Canadian Place, located in the financial district of the Toronto skyline, reaches 978 feet and ranks as the tallest habitable building in the city. It houses the Toronto headquarters of the Bank of Montreal. Scotia Plaza (902 feet) is the second-tallest building in both the city and the country, followed by the TD Canada Trust Tower (856 feet) and Commerce Court West (784 feet).

From the CN Tower, views of the city and surrounding Toronto skyscrapers are stunning. The tower ranked as the world's tallest building until the completion of Burj Khalifa in Dubai. It remains the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere and is the signature focal point for visitors to Toronto. A major tourist attraction drawing millions of visitors each year, the CN Tower makes a perfect backdrop to create souvenir Toronto skyline pictures—or a great vantage point for taking them.

There are plenty of entertainment options in the bustling city center. Located along the waterfront and set against the Toronto skyline, the Ontario Place complex provides three manmade islands for a day of picnicking, sailing, biking, amusement areas, volleyball, golf, and tennis courts.

There are also a few islands in Lake Ontario that are very close to the city, and in addition to having great attractions of their own, they offer great views of the Toronto skyline looking back across the water. They’re easy to reach as well, with ferry service leaving regularly from the docks. At Centre Island, for instance, there is a 600-acre amusement park that has rides, games and food.

The island also has picnic areas, bike and boat rentals, snack bars, and restaurants. For fun, play a round of Frisbee golf, play in the wading pools, or take a historic tram tour. At Hanlan's Point, you can rent bicycles, play tennis or volleyball, enjoy two beaches during July and August, or tour the historic Gibraltar Point Lighthouse built in 1808. The lighthouse is Toronto's oldest stone building. Hanlan's has picnic tables, fire pits, and restrooms.

Sports fans can see the Toronto Blue Jays in action at Rogers Centre. Enjoy a game or make plans to attend other sporting events, ice shows, and concerts. Whatever the event, Rogers Centre is a good choice for taking Toronto skyline pictures. The center is within walking distance of Union Station, making it convenient for transportation options.

One iconic building that is not part of the skyline per se but is still well worth a visit is Casa Loma. This magnificent estate is a Gothic Revival house that was built in 1914 and resembles a castle. You can take a self-guided tour of the castle, tunnel, secret passages, and the five-acre gardens. Casa Loma means “Hill House,” and from this vantage point, there are beautiful views of downtown, providing the perfect backdrop for taking more Toronto skyline pictures.
